The Portokalos family is back.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” star Nia Vardalos debuted the trailer for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to the 2002 romantic comedy on Wednesday’s “Today” show.
Though more than 13 years have passed since the original film, the second installment sees the return of protagonist Toula (Vardalos) and Ian, her non-Greek husband (John Corbett) as they navigate Greek life, their mixed marriage and parenthood.
Now, their college-age daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) is trying to put some space between her imposing family — much like her mother did. Then there’s a whole ‘nother set of nuptials to be planned when Toula’s scene-stealing parents (Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan) realize their priest never signed their wedding license.
Toula’s sharp-tongued Aunt Voula is back, as are her brother Nick (Louis Mandylor) and cousin Angelo (Joey Fatone). “Full House” alum John Stamos and actress Rita Wilson, who are both of Greek heritage, also are slated to appear in the film. Wilson and husband Tom Hanks’ production company, Playtone Entertainment, is also behind the film.
“We gathered the entire family back,” Vardalos said on the NBC morning show. “Everyone in the first movie is back for the second movie. We filmed in the same locations. We have the same producers. We are still a small independent film now being released by the behemoth Universal Pictures. But you know, we are still the same family and we’re really close, and we had a great, great time.”
The sequel hits theaters March 25, 2016.
