A Fort Walton Beach man was charged with possession of a firearm, possession of controlled substances and fleeing and eluding an officer after a routine traffic stop on Tuesday.
Earnest Powell was stopped driving west on Hollywood Boulevard around midnight when a Fort Walton Beach Police officer noticed his expired tags.
According to the arrest report, Powell, who is a convicted felon, stopped his car after the officer turned on his lights, but then took off when the officer approached his vehicle.
Powell ran multiple stop signs and sped through residential neighborhoods. He eventually stopped at the intersection of Wright Parkway and Cape Drive and fled on foot for about 100 yard. Officers found him burying a hoodie in a mound of sand.
The hoodie was retrieved and contained 0.9-grams of crack-cocaine, multiple unknown pills and a 9mm loaded pistol. Officers also found 7.8 grams of marijuana in Powell‘s front pants pocket.
